About antique store fixtures

It is often said that if you wait long enough, any style that was popular in the past will come back into fashion again.

Not only is this principle true for clothing styles or music, but it is also true with retail store fixtures. In the early 90s, the look that was popular in the early 60s made a strong comeback. It now appears that the look that was popular in the 70s is making a comeback. Not only does this rule of thumb apply to the style and type of merchandise being sold, but it also applies to the look and feel of the retail outlet selling the products.

If you want to create a look of days gone by, a good way for you as a new business owner to save money on your start up expenses would be to do some research and find vintage store fixtures which can often be purchased for a fraction of their original cost.

You may find it difficult to locate what you are looking for, and when you find that item, you may find that someone else is willing, and able, to pay more for the item. Vintage store fixtures, which have been well maintained and are in working condition are few and far between.

A variety of different looks for retail establishments have been popular at some time or another over the past 100 years. In one particular era, wood was very popular, while in another era, the look of choice was brushed metal. In the 1950’s when plastics were a big business, many retailers jumped on the plastic bandwagon.

Plastic displays were all over in stores. You could barely turn around in a retail establishment without seeing a display that was made of some kind of plastic. Later, metal strands coated in rubbery plastic materials with outrageously bright colors, such as bright orange spinning book racks or yellow and red clothing hangers which were made from metal and coated with colored plastics, became the bold new look in retail.

The retail industry is a competitive one. Statistics indicate that becoming successful in retail endeavors can be difficult. Nearly 28 percent of existing businesses close each year, and, over time, nearly 80 percent of all retail stores either close or are purchased by competitors.

Although closing a shop is not necessarily good news for the owner of that particular shop, the closure can be good news for the person opening a new business. The fixtures that were used by the owner of the shop that is closing will likely be sold at reduced prices or auctioned off.

You may want to check your area for local auctions if you are planning on opening a retail store. If there are not enough auctions in the city in which you are located, check newspapers of surrounding cities and be prepared to travel to auctions nearby. If you do not find any auctions in local areas, or in areas to which you would consider traveling, go online and check the online auction sites.

Attractive, vintage store fixtures are sometimes overlooked on these sites. You may be able to secure an antique fixture for you store for just pennies on the dollar.

They can be a great find, especially if they are just what you have been looking for.
